About the author

Having spent much of his childhood visiting historic sites with his grandfather, Simon fell in love with the Roman heritage of the region, beginning with the world famous Hadrian’s Wall. His fascination with the ancient world snowballed with interest in Egypt, Greece and Byzantium, though his focus has remained Rome. A born and bred Yorkshireman with a love of country, history and architecture, Simon spends most of his time visiting historic sites, writing, researching the ancient world and reading.
Simon’s career meandered along an eclectic path from the Ministry of Agriculture to network management before settling back into the ancient world, returning to university to complete an honours degree in classical history. With a rekindled love of all things Roman, he set off on a journey to turn Caesar’s Gallic War diaries into a novel accessible to all. Marius’ Mules was completed in 2003 and has garnered considerable, bestseller status and reviews, spawning numerous sequels.
Now, with in excess of 40 novels available in numerous languages, Simon is a prolific writer, spanning genres and eras and releasing novels both independently and through renowned publishers including Canelo, Head of Zeus, and Orion. Simon’s varied series cover numerous periods of ancient Rome, Medieval and Renaissance Europe, Viking Byzantium, and the Templar Knights. Simon writes full time and is represented by MMB Creative literary agents.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2024Kind of like a James Bond story. A real hero with lots of obstacles and challenges. A fun read and quite a fantasy.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2022The history is fascinating and the storyline is fun. I’m sure I’d rate it 5 stars if I had the time to do the research the author requests but I don’t. So that said this has been a fun series to follow and learn about history as well as lose myself in.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2017S.J.A. Turney certainly did not disappoint in this third book of his Praetorian series. Once started, I picked it up to continue reading whenever I had opportunity and completed it far too quickly. I'm not saying it was too brief a book. I'm saying I was enjoying it and was disappointed to find I'd come to the last page. The book moves quickly with some interesting plot twists and surprises. Best to sleep with one eye open and keep your gladius at your side.
I'm ready for more and will be ordering the fourth book of the series as soon as it is published.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2017Eagles in Dacia is a "Road Story" where our little group of Rufinus, his lady ex-slave Sernova, her slave boy, Luca and the dog from hell, Acheron are on a journey into Dacia, modern Romania.
As they travel, they get into a lot of trouble and meet both good and bad people. The villains are especially nasty in this volume. All the minor characters are fully drawn. You can feel the care that he puts onto people. I am formally asking that Narcissus and his band return somehow. As the journey continues, our party get into more and more trouble. There comes a point where you ask, OK Simon how are you going to get them out of THIS?
He does and in a very satisfying way - no spoilers here.
What shines through is the relationship between Sernova and Rufinus. I have to suspect that this this somewhat reflects the author's own life:) Below the snide remarks and the difficulties is a deep love and a growing mutual respect. Their interaction is both funny and very touching. There are a series of running jokes between them that get funnier as the book unfolds.
As a dog lover, I also love Acheron who is on the one hand a gentle giant but for whom the command "Kill" is obeyed with enthusiasm. The author has a habit of killing off good characters. So far he has resisted killing off Acheron. So I am warning you S.....
Dacia or Romania is another character in this book. The author made a visit there before he wrote the book and his experience there shines through - I travelled a lot there back in the 1990's and also love the place. It is a bit like how Switzerland might have been in 1930. Rufinus is a bit of a weed about the local food. Romania is the centre of all things offal that I like but it is hard for the western visitor as it was for Rufinus then. Every part of the animal is eaten!
How better to spend a winter evening or a trip than with Rufinus
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2023An excellent read, makes you fell part of the action as well as everyday Roman word life. Enjoyed the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2020Sent to the half-pacified province of Dacia to scope out the loyalty of two senior officials, Rufinus is aware that he may be escaping a pit of vipers in Rome only to tread on something just as nasty in this wild land. Sure enough, he discovers a gold embezzlement scheme that involves a vicious tribune, a brutal centurion, and possibly higher-ups as well. Our trusting hero is unfortunately not very devious, and possibly the worst negotiator in the Roman Empire. Hoping to return triumphantly to Rome, where his discovery of the embezzlement may induce the emperor’s powerful chamberlain, Cleander, to free Rufinus’s brother from hostageship, Rufinus prematurely blabs his findings to the wrong person and ends up on the run across the breadth of Dacia.
Fortunately for him (and us readers), he’s not alone. His freedwoman Senova, the slaveboy Luca, and the hound Acheron are with him as he races cross-country, hoping to reach the Euxine Sea and a ship for Rome before his enemies pounce. Author S.J.A. Turney has personally explored Dacia (now Romania), and his knowledge of the topography and the Roman settlements adds hugely to the story’s color and suspense. The desperate chase has a degree of improbability (I was reminded of Butch Cassidy asking, “Who ARE those guys?”), but it gives Senova a chance to made snide remarks and allows Rufinus to show his bravery. A highly recommended installment in the “Praetorian” series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent.
Much of this book is a journey full of many dangers. S.J.A. Turney's descriptions and knowledge of history are impressive. It is obvious that he has travelled the route himself. With a great plot and his usual excellent writing style, this is a book not to be missed.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great read
Look, this is the third book in this series and if you enjoyed the predecessors you will most likely have fun reading this.
It still offers a great mixture of intrigue in Roman times with fascinating and/or slimy characters. Rufinus still has to endude more than is fun to read, but again, if you managed this in the previous books, you will endure it here.
I thought about giving 5 stars, but to be honest, I prayed that one character would die after 3/4 of the books. And not one of the enemies you are supposed to despise. I really, really dislike Senova, her entire character, every action. I wish she wouldn't have been part of the story at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldnt put it down
This is the third and best instalment so far following Rufinus through Dacia, this is a fantastic adventure that literally leaves you not wanting to place the book down in case you miss anything, there is no let up in the action with an increasing sense of tension and excitement with every page turn, the supporting cast of bad guys are excellent and totally hateful and plentiful and well written and so believable it's got me wanting to find myself a Sarmation hunting for for protection, this work is so well researched you could almost be in the valleys and mountain passes and forts and villages, with plenty of action so well described you feel like your watching from the side lines, Mr Turney is an excellent prolific author who's creative well is deep varied and full, combined with a being a totally dedicated family man amazes me how he can produce one book let alone have many on the go and many more in production and never let the quality drop, roll on book 4

2.0 out of 5 stars Not very good
A pale imitation of his previous books. I could not relate to the main character as his back story did not make sense and neither did his mission. The main character was so unrelateable i actually found him to be annoying. The story lacked action and a coherent plot and was very difficult to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Travels through Roman Romania
Names and tribes I have never heard of and set all in a historical void of time and place. Another well written and entertaining story for the historical reader
